Philippe Swyncop

1878-1949

Philippe Swyncop studied at the Academy in Brussels during the years 1892-1898. His teachers were Constant Montald and Jean-François Portaels . He was a fellow student of Paul-Jean Martel , Jef Dutillieu , E. Voets, Lucien Rion, Julien De Beul, Jacques Madyol and Emile Bulcke .

He participated in the contests for the Rome Prize in 1898, 1904 and 1907, without ever being among the laureates. In 1900 he did obtain the Godecharle prize .

He traveled frequently in France, Spain and Italy, trips that have influenced his theme. He would, for that matter, live for twelve years in Spain, where he artistically paints southern paintings.

He was a member of "Le Sillon" (1893-1910) a group that included artists such as A. Degreef, Alfred Bastien , Arthur Navez, Laval, Haustraete, Godfrinon, Niekerk, Edgard Tytgat, Maurice Lefebure, Beauck, Jean Colin, Max Chotiau and Rik Wouters .

He was also a member of the " Cercle Artistique d'Auderghem ".

Until 1924, he worked mainly as an impressionist portraitist.

Exhibitions:

• Ghent, Salon 1902: "Armenian music"
• He also exhibited at the Antwerp artists' group "Als ick kan". In their 50th exhibition in 1905 in the Buyle Hall in Antwerp, he showed "Market in Brussels"
• Participation in the group exhibition at Maison d'Art Moderne in Brussels in 1920 together with Jean Colin , Charles Swyncop , Arthur Navez , Samuel Milbauer , L. Bisschops, Jean-Jacques Gailliard and J. Payro.
• Participation in the group exhibition at the Boigelot Gallery in Brussels in 1921, together with Eugène Plasky , Alfred Bastien , Charles Houben , Jean Gouweloos , Charles Crespin , Léon Spilliaert and a few others.
