Orestes Gaulhiac was born in 1960 at Santiago Cuba. In 1976, at the age of sixteen, he moved to Havana and began his studies of art and design. During this time Gaulhiac received classes in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture and art history, graduating in 1980 with a degree in Scenographic Design.

In 1981 Gauliac began his professional life as a designer, working for the next ten years in Cuban television, where he won several awards and mentions for his work.

In 1991 he bravely followed a deep calling to to fine art and so left his media job and became a painter.

To understand the style, technique and lyrical expressions in the work of Orestes Gauhliac, it helps to understand the atmosphere in Cuba during his formative years as an artist. The personal and political situation was often dire. Admist their suffering, and to quench their need to express themselves honestly, artist had to be very careful, often cloaking their messages in abstractions or fantasies. Power, privilege, hypocrisy and freedom are consistent themes.

Through exhibiting locally in both collectives and occasioinal solo exhibitions, he quickly gained the respect of both the Cuban art community and an international audience; such is the constant flow of visitors to Havana. He caught the attention of dealers and patrons and was acquired by several prestigious private collections in the United States, Europe and Latin America.

In 2014 Gaulhiac moved to Miami where he continues to live and work.

Outside of his native country Gaulhiac has exhibited in Spain, Portugal, Norway, Mexico and Panama. In the United States he shows in Los Angeles, Chicago and recurrently in Boston as well as Florida. Gauhliac remains a prolific painter, enjoying his family, his life and work with great passion.
