Herschel Levit

1912-1986

Born in Philadelphia in 1912, Herschel Levit studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Levit was an influential teacher who developed the careers of his students including Peter Hirsch, Martin Lipsitt and Tom Courtos amongst others. Levit s artistic output extended beyond his paintings into design and illustration.

His work has been exhibited at the Metropolitian Museum of Fine Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Chicago Institute of Fine Art.
