Lajos Ebneth

1902-1982

December 17, 1947: An exhibition of drawings by Lagos d’Ebneth, contemporary Hungarian-Dutch sculptor, opens in the Brooklyn Museum Print Gallery December 17 to be current through January 25, 1948.

Lagos d’Ebneth was born East Carpathia in Hungary in 1902. He studied chemical engineering and art in Hungary and later spent much time in the studio of Franz von Stuck. In 1923 d’Ebneth move to Holland where he has since lived. Although his principal interest is sculpture, he is also known as a painter. His drawings are sensitive studies in which fine stipple-like patterns may be likened to the surface texture of granite. The artist never losses the special quality of his subject whether it be the charming bewilderment of two small birds or the primitive strength of a bison. His drawings reflect discernment, taste and the inner poise of an able artist.

Well known in Europe, d’Ebneth’s work is represented is most of the museums in Hungary, the Museum of the City of Amsterdam, the Boymans Museum in Rotterdam, the Municipal Museum in the Hague, the National Gallery in Stockholm and the National Gallery in Copenhagen. Thirty of his drawings and seven small pieces of sculpture are included in the present exhibition.
