Jay Meuser
1911-1963

Jay Meuser was born September 28, 1911. This American born artist was a “jack of all trades.” His artist endeavors include abstract expressionist painting, portrait painting, illustration, and cartoonist for newspaper editorial pages. He also worked as a teacher at the Art School of San Francisco, was a baseball pitcher, vaudeville performer, sailor, and boxer. At the age of 31, he was the youngest chief of police in Marin County, California, and he had worn fourteen different law enforcement badges.

In 1938 Meuser married Dorothy Ellen Morris. Their daughter, Jacqueline Ellen Meuser would go on to marry William Saroyan's cousin, Suren Saroyan, MD. By 1949 Meuser had devoted his life to painting full time.

Meuser painted the portraits of many prominent 20th century personalities, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy. His portrait of Roosevelt hung in the White House and he received a personal letter of thanks from the late president.
