JASCHA SCHWARZMANN

1902-1973

Schwarzmann was born in Odesa, Ukraine, in 1902.

It has yet to be determined precisely when his family moved to the United States.

After settling in Detroit, Michigan, he eventually became a virtuoso cellist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In one article, it was noted, and not in a flattering way, that he had a dispute with Toscanini.

Through several period newspaper articles, we find that he had been mentioned as a notable musician in both Detroit and San Francisco.

In one article, there is mention of a self-portrait that he painted before moving to California.

H e moved to San Francisco, where he played cello with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

Later, he moved to Inglewood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles.

Schwarzmann often showed his paintings in the Los Angeles area, including the All City Outdoor Art Festival at Barnsdall Park in the 1950s and 1960s.

Notably, he exhibited at the American Painters in Paris Exhibition.

Doing the research, I found his name is sometimes misspelled as Schwartzman.
