Edmond Anne Antoine Tapissier


1861-1943Edmond Tapissier was born June 14, 1861 in Lyon. He studied under Jean-Baptiste Chatigny in Lyon and Alexandre Cabanel and Fernand Cormon at l’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The artist spent time traveling in St. Petersburg, Italy, Greece and the Middle East.


In 1918 Tapissier was appointed naval painter and in 1927 was a Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur. He worked as an illustrator for Marcel Prevost, Lamartine, Albert Samain and Leo Duran. Tapissier was commissioned to create the tapestry cartoon series Les Sirens and created the wall decorations for several churches as well.


Tapissier was very active in the Salon des Artistes Française, of which he was a member and where he received a bronze medal in 1908. He also exhibited at the Salon des Arts Décoratifs and the Salon d’Hiver. In 1902 Tapissier received a silver medal in Seattle.


The Galerie le Griffon in Lyons held a retrospective of the artist’s work in 1964.


Museums in Brive-la-Gaillarde, Lyons and Tulle have collected his work. Tapisserie is listed in the Benezit dictionary of artists.


The artist died April 27, 1943.
