Lucy Doane

1908-2010

Lucy Doane was born in Nahant on December 22, 1908.

She attended Nahant public schools and graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1925.

Revealing her artistic abilities at an early age, she pursued her calling in that field and received her B.S. degree at the Mass. College of Art in 1929, her MFA from Teachers College, Columbia University, and did further study abroad at the Netherlands Institute of History and Art.

She taught art for several years at Keene Teachers' College in New Hampshire and then become director of art in the public schools in Rutland, Vermont, retiring from that position in 1971. An avid traveler, she enjoyed trips to Europe and Asia, getting inspiration for her paintings from visiting various historic sites and museums.

She then lived for a number of years in the Bennington, Vermont, area where she was an active member of the Bennington Area Acts Council, the Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Bennington Museum. In 1991, she was honored by being made a fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences, in recognition of her "outstanding contribution to the cultural resources of the state."

Early in her career, Lucy Doane was known as an illustrator of children's books, but as time went on her interest shifted to painting the beautiful landscapes of Vermont as well as the ever-changing seascapes of the North Shore of Massachusetts. Her paintings were exhibited widely in New England and New York and many were purchased to become part of prestigious private and public collections including the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.
