Schönberger's painting is characterised by rigorously harmonised muted tones, and is reminiscent of Cézanne's early period. Work by him was exhibited at the Belvedere in Vienna (1927); at the Tamas Gallery in Budapest (1930); at the Mücsarnok in Budapest (1958); and at the exhibition Beöthy and the Hungarian Avant-Garde (Beöthy et l'avant-garde hongroise) at the Galerie Franka Berndt, Paris (1985-1986). There was a retrospective of his work in 1972 in Budapest.
